How Is ‘Older Abuse’ Defined?

Elder abuse can be best explained or defined as ‘single, or repeated acts where there is a breach of trust within the relationship causing harm to older persons’. Therefore, based on the wider problem, it calls upon the concerns of the international community to take necessary action as appropriate. The crisis of abuse of the elderly occurs in various developing and developed countries, yet many cases remain unreported. Therefore, it clearly calls for a global multi-pronged response to protect the rights of older persons.

History

WEAAD was launched by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization.

The main objective of the organization is to bring the communities of the world towards a common platform to sensitize the public about abuse. The aim of awareness is achieved through cultural, economic, social as well as demographic processes where elder abuse has become a matter of grave concern and outright neglect.

It brings the whole world on a common platform where everyone demonstrates their support for the urgency of the steps needed to stop the abuse of the older generation. Unfortunately, the issue of elder abuse has not been addressed the way it should have been and has not attracted the desired and necessary national importance.

According to the UN International Plan of Action, which explicitly stated and expressed ‘elderly abuse’, it represents a violation of human rights and causes a serious problem to public health.

The cases indicate even more seriousness as there is an aging population around the world and by the year 2030, the aging population is expected to be 1.4 billion. There has been a shocking revelation where 4 to 6 percent of the elderly are suffering from a particular type of abuse and the worst part is that they do not come to the notice of the authorities concerned.

Hence, the day becomes a part of important norms to make the public aware about the right to respect, which elders want and expect so that they can lead a life of respect.

One of the rampant abuses involving elders is related to the financial aspect, as there have been various scams targeting seniors and this is certainly a matter of serious concern.

However there is no end to the atrocities on elders as there has been laxity by the caregivers, who often fall short in giving them the much needed basic care in terms of nutritious food, safety and hygiene as well as timely medicines.

How to follow the day?
