National Technology Day in India : National Technology Day is celebrated every year on 11th May to celebrate the increasing technological progress that the country has registered. This has been done in view of the successful nuclear test operation in Pokhran.

It is the day which signifies the newly found benchmark that India has created and registered in the field of technology. May 11 is related to this important day when India’s image has definitely got a boost due to technological advancement in space. Yes, it was the Pokhran nuclear test of 1998 where five nuclear bomb tests were detonated. It was on the same day and year that the Shakti missile was successfully fired at the Indian Army’s Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan. The man who led the test was APJ Abdul Kalam who is popularly named ‘Missile Man’ by India. Soon after, the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee announced that India had become a nuclear state. It became the sixth country in the world to enter the “nuclear club” stage of nations. Hence, the origin of “National Technology Day” dates back to 1999.
The origin of this important day dates back to May 11, 1999, which marks the exemplary work being done by Indian scientists and engineers. Late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has named this day.
Other important operations carried out on 11 May 1998
- “Hansa-3” which is believed to be India’s first indigenous aircraft, was test-fired in Bangalore on this day
- There was also a test firing that day which was done with Trishul missile.
It was indeed a proud moment for every Indian, as at that time only a handful of countries came under the category of nuclear power. India being referred to as the sixth country has become one such new entrant to join the list of players which in itself is a very commendable news for the country.
