History

The mission of the United Nations began with the formation of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO). It was the first peacekeeping mission that started operating in Palestine on 29 May. Therefore, the specific day holds historical significance as it was decided at the United Nations General Assembly on 24 February to celebrate this day as the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.

Right after the start of the operation, the need to send peacekeepers increased. Since then, more than 1 million men and women have happily served in 72 UN peacekeeping missions. This operation has resulted in a positive change to save people from distress, animosity and poverty which simply cannot be expressed in words.
