International Day for the Fight Against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing : June 5 is observed as the day to fight against illegal fishing. The day holds global significance on the danger associated with the same. The practice is observed everywhere in the world which presents a serious problem and challenge to the survival of the fishes. Sadly, those who depend on fisheries for food and jobs are really paying the brunt.
After all, fisheries give strong reason to provide employment, boost the business of trade, grow the economy as well as prove to be an important source of food. The world’s population continues to grow where fisheries provide food security. There are some startling revelations in the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization data where illegal and irresponsible activities have resulted in huge loss of 11-26 tonnes of fish annually. This puts an additional burden on the economy and is estimated at US$10-23 billion. This is a huge loss.
To check the growing threat and prevent illegal practice, the United Nations General Assembly has appealed to the international community to effectively control harvesting and end such destructive practices as well as hollowing out the world economy. Huh. Therefore, to sensitize the public, the United Nations General Assembly designated 5 June as the “International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing”.
The main objective of this day is clearly to draw the attention of the world to the increasing threats posed by IUU fishing activities. This is equally to demonstrate the importance and relevance of the efforts needed to fight the illegal activities that are currently taking place.
The International Day for the Fight against IUU was observed for the first time on 5 June 2018. The day naturally assumes greater significance as more than 820 million people are directly dependent on fisheries and international efforts speak volumes about the amount of effort needed to address the issue.
What is IUU Phishing?
IUU fishing is a term used for illegal fishing related activities and these practices go against national, regional as well as international laws. This can be better understood and addressed as non-reporting as well as misreporting on fishing operations. Therefore, these practices are usually carried out continuously without the knowledge of the authorities concerned as it causes huge losses.
The day brings to the attention of the global community to do something in this regard with a purpose so that proper sensitization can be done. Naturally, the lurking dangers and dangers that are posed by IUU fishing activities are enormous as it hinders the efforts of the concerned authorities and the public who are working towards fighting the menace.
