Honestly, taking gifts for every holiday, occasion and birthday can cause drainage after a while. Soon you will start asking yourself “what do they need?” Or “I can’t think of anything to get them”. Trust me, we are all in the same exact position, you are not alone. Through years of practice, trials and errors, I want to share my secrets of how to pick the perfect gift every time.
This is a tried and true method that will help you become a gift-giving hero to friends’ family and neighbors. From small budgets to high budgets, this method can help you pick a gift that will impress you and feel like you put a lot of time and effort into it (even if you haven’t).
Here are six simple steps that you can adopt for Perfect Gifting Everytime
- Know their hobbies
- Pick up the packaging
- Know what they don’t like
- How are you going to present it
- Unique item
- Personal items
1. Know their hobbies – what do they want?
Do not confuse this step. If someone loves golf, for example, you don’t have to get them a golf ball, clubs, gloves, and more. Often times when people are passionate about something, they do not need much. For example, my brother suffers from Pokémon. He has clothes, hats, shoes, phone case, etc. all Pokémon. Knowing that he has all these different things. Instead I can buy him a Pokémon Party Pass because I know he would love to hang out with others and Pokémon would like to play with them. Or, if I’m going for a budget-friendly gift, I might just humiliate him to go “Pokémon Raids” with him, so he has someone to play with.
Finding a gift related to their hobby can make it easy to know that they love cookies. I could bake them a fresh batch of my favorite flavor of cookie and just leave it at their house. It is not difficult and certainly does not need to be expensive.
2. Pick up great packaging – Who wants boring paper twists?
Many years of your wrapping paper will soon fall behind you. While it is sometimes okay to wrap gifts in a cute and fun wrapping paper, you want your gift to be different and different from previous years. There are hundreds of different ways to present a gift, ranging from gift boxes, gift baskets, and even gift crates. This step is especially important if our goal is to keep your gift out of others, who will make a gift at the same time (eg: a friend’s baby shower)
The key to choosing the right packaging goes with what is included in the gift. If you are gifting a high end spa then imagine how it would be presented in a commercial or a movie. Would you rather have it in paper wrap or in a personalized pine gift box with a bow and greenery on top? Creating the right packaging is not one size suitable for everyone, and knowing the gift recipient will help you understand what they would like.
*** You can get bonus points in the gift department if the packaging can be reused or repurchased so it will not go waste (such as wrapping paper foten thrown away).
3. Know what they don’t like – are they supposed to enjoy it right?
The example that I offer when talking about this step is that if a friend of yours is gluten intolerant, you won’t give him bread. Thought your neighbor might think that this is the best gift ever, your friend, while they might appreciate the effort, would end it or throw it away.
Don’t get me wrong, emotion is important, however if you are going to spend time, money, etc., you need to make sure that this is something they are going to be able to enjoy. A great way to do this is to ask your friends and family what they want / need / like and dislike.
He said that the government has taken several steps to prevent such incidents. If friends and family are unable to give you an idea, you can always shed some light on their social media. Pinterest is your best friend when you are trying to find a gift for her. You will be able to see the things he likes and work easily from there.
4. How are you going to present it – presentation is key
Presentation IS key (can I express it adequately?). You can give a 3 dollar gift, but if it is well presented and pleasing to the eye, it is worth a lot.
A great example is this “A Little Handy” gift crate. The gift itself is good (especially as a housewife gift or thank you gift box) but what really pulls it together is how it is presented. Well curated items with a touch of greenery, it is impressive in a gift presentation.
Another fun and exciting way to present your gift is to set it up the way it will actually be used. This “Cheese the Day” gift is a perfect example. Set a charcot board with her favorite wine and cheese and place it on a glass of wine, knife and slate tray for future uses!
This gift is another great example of presenting / making a gift that is personal. This “scrub a dub” gift is everything in the crate Lily needs for the perfect bathing night. With the gift being personal, this gift looks like you have put in a lot of effort, when in fact it takes very little time to put this gift together.
5. Unique Item – You did not grab this gift from Walmart
Let’s just say. As human beings we are very busy, often the gift is the last thing we think about until 20 minutes before the birthday party. Instead of doing a quick run to the grocery store and seeing what you speak, there are a few items on hand that you can quickly gift to many. If you find a product that you love, it often doesn’t go away to say that the people around you will like it too.
An example I have is a local chocolate shop that sells these delicious candy bars that you can only buy there. I keep a stash around my house (mainly no one else in my family can find them) and I can grab a chocolate bar when I need a quick gift for friends, neighbors, etc. I can write a quick and personal note, and then I’m ready to go. Finding a product or item that you cannot easily find from the grocery store shows that you have tried to get a gift for someone (even if you do not actually have it)
6. Personalized Items – To make this gift you have lots of looks in this gift
This step is a must if you want the gift to appear as if you put a lot of time and effort into it. You can find many companies that engrave or personalize various items for cheap (or even free like BrilliantGifts.com). Etsy is a great resource for finding unique and personalized items. Be sure to plan enough time in your gift process to finish shipping and adjusting orders. I have some photos below various items that can be done individually to think about.
